Cuthbert native Rosey Grier is an American actor, singer, Protestant minister, and former professional American football player. Rosey started playing football at an early age.
After his retirement, Grier hosted the Rosey Grier Show on KABC-TV, a weekly half-hour television show discussing community affairs in Los Angeles.
Grier was appointed as a bodyguard for his pal, United States senator and presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy. He was the guard of Ethel Kennedy, the Senator’s wife. She was then expecting a child, the night that Kennedy was assassinated in Los Angeles in 1968.
Grier and Olympic decathlon gold medalist Rafer Johnson heard shots fired ahead of them. Grier came close and saw men wrestling with gunman Sirhan Sirhan. Grier jumped into the fray.

He played high school football at Abraham Clark High School in Roselle, New Jersey, graduating in 1951. Grier attended Pennsylvania State University, 1951-55.

As a professional player, Grier was selected to be part of the New York Giants and the original Fearsome Foursome of the Los Angeles Rams. He participated in the Pro Bowl twice.

In 1955, Rosey was picked to play for ‘New York Giants’ (1995 NFL Draft). He continued playing for the ‘Giants’ until 1962.
During his time with the ‘Giants’, he gave notable performances and played a major role in winning ‘NFL Championship’ in 1956 and ‘Eastern Conference Championships’ in 1958, 1959, 1961, and 1962.
While he was still playing for ‘New York Giants’, he was picked for the ‘Pro Bowl’ first in 1956, and then 1961. His defensive game earned him the title ‘All-Pro’ in 1956.
He was again bestowed with the title from 1958-62. During this phase of his career, many other teams showed their interest in drafting him into their respective side and in 1963 he was eventually selected to play for ‘Los Angeles Rams’.
As a professional footballer, he played for ‘Rams’ during the final stages of his career. Grier became a part of the strongest defensive line in the game of football. Along with other star players like Deacon Jones, Merlin Olsen, and Lamar Lundy, the defensive line was popularly known as ‘The Fearsome Foursome’. His football career ended in 1967 after he couldn’t recover completely from a ruptured Achilles Tendon.

Grier has also devoted his time to ‘The Prostate Cancer Foundation’. He is the writer of several books – ‘Shooting Star’ (1993), ‘Rosey Grier’s Needlepoint for Men’ (1973), ‘Rosey Grier’s All-American Heroes: Multicultural Success Stories’ (1993), etc. His autobiography ‘Rosey, an Autobiography: The Gentle Giant’ was released in 1986. On January 5, 2017. Grier reported that he would be seeking to be the Governor of California from the Republican Party during the California Gubernatorial Election in 2018.
