Peter Obi resigned from office on May 29, 2007, following the general elections, which Emmanuel Nnamdi Uba won. He went back to court, this time claiming that the four-year term he won in the 2003 elections only began to run when he took office in March 2006. On June 14, 2007, the Supreme Court of Nigeria upheld Peter Obi‘s claim and reinstated him in office.

This effectively ended the tenure of Peter Obi‘s successor, Andy Uba, whose election on 14 April 2007 was overturned by the Supreme Court because Obi’s four-year tenure should have continued until March 2010.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Peter Obi the winner of the 2010 Anambra State gubernatorial election, defeating Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. Governor Peter Obi‘s election victory extended his tenure as governor of Anambra State for another four years. He completed his second term on March 17, 2014, and handed over the governorship to Willie Obiano.

President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan appointed Peter Obi as the Nigerian Securities and Exchange Commission chairman following the 2015 general election (SEC).
