Michael Potter Jr Net Worth | What is Michael Porter Jr salary?
he NBA’s collectively bargained age rule protects jobs for veteran players while inducing top high-school seniors to delay their entry into the league by one year. The rule is controversial on many grounds, including its inducement of elite, young athletes to provide a year of unpaid labor to the NCAA. However, for NBA rookie forward Michael Porter Jr., the league’s collectively bargained age rule has led to an especially harsh result.
In Porter’s case, the rule will cost him an estimated $8.5 million in guaranteed salary over a three-year period from June 2017 to June 2020. This loss is attributable to his one-year delay in earning a salary, coupled with a serious back injury he suffered while playing college basketball that reduced both his draft stock and his initial league salary.
Those who follow high school basketball will remember that in 2017, Porter completed a stellar high school basketball season in which he averaged 36.2 points and 13.6 rebounds per game, as well as earned the Most Valuable Player Award in the McDonald’s All-America Game.
Loss
If not for the NBA’s collectively bargained age requirement, Porter would have almost certainly entered the 2017 NBA draft and earned a top-five selection. This would have entitled Porter to a guaranteed minimum of $3.8 million in salary in 2017-18, $4.6 million in salary for 2018-19, and $5.3 million in 2019-20.
Based on the NBA’s slotted salary system, Porter’s No. 14 overall draft selection by the Denver Nuggets will entitle him to $2.4 million in salary this season and $2.8 million in 2019-20 — a substantial decline in salary from a projected top-five selection. Specifically, this difference from his projected salaries in these years, if he had been taken No. 5 in the June 2017 draft, represents an additional loss of $4.7 million in expected salary over the upcoming two-year period.
