Ellen’s earliest TV features were in plenty of commercials, including one for Alpo dog food with Lorne Greene. She also went to school together with Landon’s daughter, Leslie Landon. It was Leslie who told her that she had won the role of Laura Ingalls on Little House on the character of Laura Ingalls on Little House on the Prairie, beating out over 500 kid actresses for the part.

The pilot was gunned down in 1973 and was a rating success. Almost a year later, Ellen started casting the episodes. She then became very close to the Landon family after her adoptive father passed on. However, a rupture occurred between Michael Landon’s affair with Little House’s young makeup artist, Cindy Clerico.

Gilbert had restricted contact with Landon after Little House ended during the 1983-84 episode. After seven years she was contacted by Landon’s family and upon news of his condition, paid him a warm visit following his May 9th, 1991, feature on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson where he talked about his pancreatic cancer.

She paid Landon a visit at his Malibu home where he was, by then, bedridden, and they spent the afternoon together. Landon passed on one week later. When Gilbert gave birth to her son with second husband Bruce  Boxleitner on October 6th, 1995, they named him Michael, in honor of Landon.
