The victim of a diving accident at Chevelon Canyon has been identified as Shem Bowman. Bowman was reported to have died as a result of injuries sustained in a drowning near Chevelon Bridge.
Authorities were called to the accident scene. The dive teams from the Joseph City Fire Department and the Puerco Valley Fire Department arrived at the scene around 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
They found Shem who had jumped into Chevelon Creek the night before and had not resurfaced. Bowman, a Holbrook resident, was paddleboarding with friends and family when he climbed out of the canyon. He then suddenly jumped off the bridge into the creek.

Shem Griffith died as a result of drowning injuries sustained near Chevelon Bridge. At about 1:30 p.m., the dive teams from the Joseph City Fire Department and the Puerco Valley Fire Department arrived on the scene this Saturday.
Griffith, who had gone missing after jumping into Chevelon Creek the night before. Deputies responded to the Chevelon Bridge, which is located off Territorial Road between Joseph City and Winslow, and interviewed witnesses.
They called divers from the Joseph City and Puerco Valley Fire Departments, as well as Navajo County Search and Rescue for help. They were unable to locate the subject that night and returned the following morning to resume their search.
